The Margaret River Pro has become a much anticipated annual event on the ever increasing list of must visit events taking place in the Margaret River Region.
In fact, The Margaret River Pro is so good it has been named the Best Major Festival or Event in Western Australia for the last two years at the WA Tourism Awards, a phenomenal achievement given the calibre of events that take place across Western Australia each year.
Not only is the Margaret River Pro held within minutes of world class wineries, it is held smack bang in the middle of vintage each year, that got us thinking….
Is there anywhere else in the world where you could watch the world’s best surfers compete, then take off to watch world class wine being made?
Did I hear everyone I asked say NO!!!
Enter the Waves & Wine Tour – a collaboration between Top Drop Tours and Surfing Western Australia to showcase the two sides of Margaret River in an amazing tour that has a lifespan of about 10 days each year.
With VIP access thanks to the team at Surfing WA, a glass of wine & a couple of heats were enjoyed daily, including our first guests watching Kelly Slater get eliminated, from the exclusive competitors area. An amazing experience for our ‘surfy’ guests who were right there as the great man passed the public and media, then let down his guard and showed his disappointment, out of sight, unless you were with Top Drop Tours.
After spending time at the Margaret River Pro event site it was time to head off to wineries where grapes were being picked, crushed and processed. Of course some great food and wine tastings were part of an indulgent afternoon.
It was a unanimous winner, something truly unique that showcased the best of sport, wine and food, all in a relaxed tour.
Just another reminder that the Margaret River Region really is something quite special.
With its status as a World Surf League event ensuring the very best male and female surfers from all over the world descend on our little patch of regional paradise, the Margaret River Pro is our chance to enjoy a world class sporting event in wine country.
We can’t wait for the 2017 event.
